Visitors to one of Sussex’s most famous pebble beaches have been pleasantly surprised after areas of sand were revealed following recent winter storms.

Birling Gap, near Eastbourne, has taken on an unusually sandy appearance after strong waves and high tides shifted the flint pebbles that normally dominate the shoreline.

Beachgoer Mary Sievwright, who was visiting with her mother, said the change had transformed the experience.

She said the sand was “beautiful”, adding that it would have made family trips far easier when her children were younger.

She said scrambling over pebbles had always been hard work, whereas the newly exposed sand created plenty of comfortable spots to sit and relax with family.

The National Trust says Birling Gap is well known for its seasonal changes and that storm conditions can dramatically alter the beach’s appearance.

A spokesperson explained that strong wave action during storms and high tides can uncover sandy patches that are usually hidden beneath pebbles for much of the year.

They added that this winter has seen a higher-than-usual amount of sand appearing along the beach.

Visitors are being reminded to take care, check tide times before heading out and keep well away from the base of the cliffs at all times.

The National Trust says the sandy conditions are not a regular feature at Birling Gap and is encouraging people to enjoy the rare sight while it lasts.
