A man has been jailed after raping a woman in a park in Brighton.

Alieu George, 46, of no fixed address, was found guilty of rape and sexual assault by penetration following a trial last December.

The court heard that members of the public spotted George and a woman together in Dorset Gardens at about 09:05 on Sunday 22 June 2025.

Witnesses said the woman appeared distressed before the pair were seen on the ground with George lying on top of her.

Three witnesses recognised the situation and called police.

When officers arrived they found the 35-year-old woman distraught, with George lying nearby. He told officers she was his girlfriend.

The victim later told police she had been out for drinks after work when George approached her and made excuses to separate her from the group she was with.

She said he then repeatedly tried to sexually assault her while leading her towards Dorset Gardens, where he raped her.

George was arrested at the scene and later charged.

At Brighton Crown Court on Tuesday (10 March), he was sentenced to 15 years in prison, including 12 years in custody and a further three years on extended licence.

An indefinite restraining order was also imposed.

Detective Constable Daisy Alden said the victim had shown “immense courage and determination” throughout the investigation, adding that George posed a clear danger to women.

She said police take reports of sexual offences seriously and urged anyone who has been a victim to report it online, call 101, or dial 999 in an emergency.
