More than 2,000 people have signed a petition calling for plans to close a day centre for people with disabilities in Brighton and Hove to be scrapped.

Brighton & Hove City Council has proposed closing Wellington House Day Centre as part of its annual budget plans, with the move expected to save around £400,000.

The proposal has prompted concern from families and campaigners, with parent and carer Susan Starr saying the recommendation left her feeling uneasy and that she hopes the council will reconsider stopping the service.

In response, Mitchie Alexander, the council’s cabinet member for communities, equalities, public health and adult social care, said the authority is reviewing how some of its day support services for adults are delivered.

He said the changes are intended to ensure services remain high quality while also being sustainable in the long term.
