Swimmer Dies After Getting Into Difficulty Near Brighton Palace Pier

A swimmer has died after getting into difficulty in the sea near Brighton Palace Pier on New Year’s Day.


Emergency services were called at around 10.30am after a man was pulled from the water to the west of the pier.


Despite efforts from rescue teams and paramedics, the 51-year-old man from Kettering, Northamptonshire, was pronounced dead at the scene.


Sussex Police has confirmed the death is not being treated as suspicious and the man’s next of kin have been informed. The coroner has also been notified.


HM Coastguard said it was first alerted to reports of a swimmer in difficulty shortly after 10am.


Rescue teams from Shoreham and Newhaven, along with Brighton RNLI’s inshore lifeboat, were sent to assist.
