Southern Water says it is making “good progress” repairing a burst water main near Hastings, but has warned there is still a risk some households could lose supply on Christmas Eve.
The damaged pipe was discovered in woodland to the north of the town, and repair teams have been working to remove and replace the affected section.
Around 15,000 vulnerable customers in Hastings and surrounding areas have already received bottled water as a precaution.
Residents have been urged not to use extra water or stockpile supplies, as this could make the situation worse.
The company said its best and most likely outcome is that there will be no interruption to supplies.
However, in the worst case, some homes could temporarily lose water this evening, with supplies expected to return by Christmas morning.
Bottled water stations are being prepared in case they are needed, and tankers are on standby to support key sites such as hospitals and care homes if required.
Southern Water said it has taken additional precautions following previous supply issues in Hastings in May 2024.
The company apologised for the concern caused and said teams had worked overnight to expose the pipe, remove the damaged section and begin installing a replacement.
Once fitted, the network will then need time to refill and stabilise.
Local representatives have expressed concern for residents and businesses but have praised the community response, with volunteers, community groups and organisations offering support if needed.
Southern Water has confirmed a £50 million project to fully replace the pipe over the next three years is due to begin in the new year.
