South East Water customers in Tunbridge Wells, Pembury, Frant and Eridge are being told to boil tap water for up to 10 days following an issue at a treatment works.
Residents should boil water before drinking, preparing food or brushing teeth. Pets should only be given cooled boiled water. Boiling for one minute is sufficient.
The notice was issued after monitoring showed water quality had dropped below the company’s usual standards. The problem stems from a chemical issue at Pembury Water Treatment Works.
Tap water can still be used for washing and bathing.
Dishwashers are safe if set to 65°C or above. Water filters will not remove potential contamination.
Anyone feeling unwell is urged to seek medical help.
Customers without mains water are entitled to compensation starting at £30 for initial disruption.
There is no confirmed end date, but the boil water notice is expected to remain in place for around 10 days.
